The hair designer’s work includes many aspects of her unique technique. JR combines her extensive knowledge of art formations and resourcefulness and applies them to her work to execute specific ideas, thoughts, stories, or unseen perceptions. As a result, she can create designs for various production forms.

When it comes to any film she has worked on, Julie says it’s important to always ask this question: “Is this saying what I want it to?”

In a visual reflection of the past to future forward in film, she emphasizes the importance of looking at connections between the creation and filming processes. “It truly is one brush stoke at a time. Always evolving. Always changing. Prepare and Un-Prepare. Most favorite is the Uncommon, Common.”

JR also shares her thoughts on engaging precision, abstraction, film landscapes, and deepening character inspirations: “Sometimes it’s a Performance that sets a design seen through behavior. Everything is a viable choice and it is all to be considered.”

Julie has designed for the Michael Morris film, To Leslie, which recalls the grit of the 1970s. The movie has received several recognitions, including Oscar and Spirit Awards nominations for Best Performance for Andrea Riseborough; Raindance Film Festival nomination for Best International Feature; and Best Performance for Andrea Riseborough.

Rea has also worked on the TV series Grace and Frankie, which was nominated for a Guild Award. One of her recent production works is The Accidental Getaway Driver, a film directed by Sing J. Lee, the 2023 Sundance Festival Best Director awardee.
